How can you support children living in coffee communities?
We want to share with our customers a taste of something extremely important to us. As a B Corp company , we strive to have a positive impact on the lives of every single individual involved in the bean-to-cup journey. By buying our Ethiopia coffees, you help support children in coffee farming communities of Ethiopia.
Part of the proceeds from our Ethiopia coffee goes towards funding the development of schools in the Guji zone of Ethiopia.
For young people living in rural coffee-farming areas, access to education is often limited. Children are frequently needed to work on the farm, and public transport in remote areas is relatively expensive. Together, these factors create real barriers to schooling.
Improving education in coffee farming communities.
For farmers in rural Ethiopia, coffee constitutes a major source of income.
Sudden drops in income can force families to take their children out of school. Turbulent coffee prices and low wages therefore have a direct impact on the lives and futures of children in these communities.
Alongside our long-standing commitment (20 years and counting!) to coffee farmers in the Guji region, we believe that good school facilities are essential to giving local children the education they deserve.
The Suke Quto School Project Continues!
The school project was founded by Tesfaye Bedele, owner of Suke Quto farm, and Menno Simons , founding owner of BOCCA. Working closely together, and with the support of everyone who buys our coffee, the Suke Quto school project has made a real difference.
Funding has been used to build new facilities at the nearby Kurume school, including a new wing with a library, toilets and a new gate.
Our journey doesn’t stop there. We are currently supporting the redevelopment of a school in Suke Quto village, helping to provide the infrastructure children need to continue their studies beyond 8th grade and to open up more opportunities for young people in the surrounding area.
