Many people still believe coffee isn’t healthy, but research from Wageningen University suggests otherwise. Their study shows that drinking 3 to 4 cups of coffee a day can benefit the heart, liver and brain:
-
Around 30% lower risk of premature death from heart disease
-
Up to 40% lower risk of liver disease
-
About 45% lower chance of developing liver cancer
-
Possibly a lower risk of colon and uterine cancer as well
So why is coffee good for you?
Coffee contains hundreds of natural compounds, each with its own effect on the body. The best-known is caffeine, which stimulates the nervous system and helps you stay alert and focused.
In the study, people who drank regular coffee were significantly more physically active than those who unknowingly drank decaf. When the groups switched, the pattern repeated. That more active lifestyle likely contributed to the health benefits observed.
Another important compound in coffee is chlorogenic acid, which may help prevent fat from building up in the liver. This is an important factor in lowering the risk of liver disease and liver cancer.
At BOCCA, we’re big believers in enjoying a few cups of good coffee each day. It’s reassuring to know that those cups can be good for you too.
