Carbon insetting

Our philosophy at BOCCA is innovation over compensation.
We are developing strategies to actively reduce and compensate for our company’s carbon footprint. In the coffee industry, there are still limited tools for tackling climate issues, so many companies turn to carbon offsetting – removing CO₂ elsewhere to balance out their own emissions.
We’ve chosen a different focus: carbon insetting – generating a positive impact within our own value chain and helping to preserve the forest landscapes that are home to our coffee.
What is the difference between offsetting and insetting?
As the climate crisis continues, reducing greenhouse gas emissions is more essential than ever.
Offsetting allows companies to counteract their carbon footprint by removing CO₂ from the atmosphere somewhere else. In practice, this often means buying carbon credits to support climate projects outside their own value chain.
However, offsetting alone is not enough. We believe it’s crucial to reduce our emissions internally as well.
Insetting means finding innovative ways to reduce emissions within our own supply chain. It offers a more genuinely sustainable solution – and we see it as the way forward.
How are we working on this?
Together with Carble, we are exploring how we can reduce our carbon footprint and smallholder poverty with a single investment.
We are working on a system that rewards coffee farmers for protecting the carbon stored in their agroforestry farms. By offering financial incentives, we encourage farmers to keep coffee forests intact and to maintain and expand the ecosystem benefits they provide.
Stay tuned – we’ll be sharing more about our insetting project soon.
